All-season tyres — also called all-weather tyres — have become increasingly popular in Scotland over the last five years. They promise to eliminate the faff of seasonal tyre changes while still offering winter safety. But are they actually good enough for Scottish roads? This guide gives you an honest answer.

What Are All-Season Tyres?

All-season tyres are a compromise tyre designed to work year-round. They use a tread compound that stays reasonably flexible in cold temperatures (unlike summer tyres, which harden below 7°C), and a tread pattern that can channel away both summer rain and light snow.

The critical marker to look for is the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol — a snowflake in a mountain outline on the tyre sidewall. This indicates the tyre has passed minimum winter performance standards. Without this, an "all-season" tyre is just a summer tyre with marketing.

Most reputable all-season tyres carry the 3PMSF symbol — if your all-season doesn't have it, treat it as a summer tyre.

Hankook Kinergy 4S2

Best value all-season for Scotland.

All-Season Tyres and Scottish Weather: The Reality

Scotland has more nuanced weather than a simple "summer/winter" split:

Western Scotland (Glasgow, Argyll, Dumbarton, Ayrshire): Rarely sees severe snow but has heavy rainfall and mild but damp winters. All-season tyres are excellent here. Central Belt (Edinburgh, Falkirk, Stirling, Perth): Occasional snow, significant winter rainfall. All-season tyres are well-suited for most drivers. Aberdeenshire and Angus: More frequent snow and harder frosts than the west. All-season tyres are adequate for town driving but winter tyres are better for rural routes. 4. Very high mileage in summer — all-season tyres wear faster in warm conditions than summer tyres; if you drive 20,000+ miles/year mostly in summer, summer tyres may be more economical
