Aquaplaning in Scotland: What It Is, How to Prevent It, What to Do

Aquaplaning is a real risk on Scotland's wet roads. Learn what causes it, how proper tyres and tread depth reduce the risk, and what to do if your car aquaplanes.

Scotland's high rainfall makes aquaplaning one of the most important driving hazards to understand. The country experiences over 1,000mm of rain annually in many areas — some western Highland locations exceed 3,000mm. On motorways and fast A-roads, standing water can form rapidly, making aquaplaning a real risk throughout the year.

What Is Aquaplaning?

Aquaplaning (also called hydroplaning) occurs when a tyre cannot displace water fast enough to maintain contact with the road surface. A thin layer of water builds between the tyre and the road, and the tyre effectively floats on this film. When this happens:

  • The tyre loses traction almost completely
  • Steering input has little effect
  • Braking is severely compromised
  • The car continues in whatever direction it was heading

It can happen without warning. One moment you are driving normally; the next, the steering feels light and unresponsive — a sensation experienced drivers recognise immediately.

What Causes Aquaplaning?

1. Speed

The faster you drive through standing water, the less time a tyre has to displace water through its tread grooves. The risk increases dramatically above 50mph.

2. Water depth

Deeper standing water is harder to displace. Scotland's roads — particularly rural roads with poor drainage — can develop significant standing water quickly during heavy rain.

3. Tread depth

This is the single most important preventable factor. Tyre tread grooves exist specifically to channel water away from the contact patch. A new tyre at 8mm can displace approximately 8 litres of water per second at 50mph. A tyre at 1.6mm (the legal limit) displaces far less — making aquaplaning far more likely.

4. Tyre pressure

Under-inflated tyres have a smaller contact patch and less rigid carcass, making aquaplaning more likely. Over-inflated tyres have a smaller contact patch for a different reason — both extremes are worse than correct pressure.

5. Road surface and drainage

Motorway surfaces (typically smooth tarmac) are more prone to aquaplaning than textured road surfaces with better drainage.

Aquaplaning Risk on Scottish Roads

Motorways (M8, M74, M77, M80, M9)

Scottish motorways, like English ones, can develop lanes of standing water in heavy rain. The M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh is particularly prone to standing water in its lower sections during heavy rain events. Reduce speed in heavy rain even if the road looks clear.

Highland A-roads (A9, A82, A87, NC500)

Highland roads often lack central reservations and have poor drainage camber in places. Standing water can appear rapidly during rain. The A9 through Drumochter has a history of flooding in autumn.

Urban roads

Glasgow and Edinburgh experience flash flooding during heavy downpours. Low-lying roads near rivers (Clyde, Forth, Tay tributaries) are most vulnerable.

How to Prevent Aquaplaning

1. Maintain tyre tread above 3mm

On Scotland's wet roads, 3mm is the practical safety minimum, not 1.6mm. The difference in water displacement between 3mm and 1.6mm tread is significant. Check your tread monthly.

2. Maintain correct tyre pressure

Check pressures monthly and before long journeys. See your door placard for the correct figure. Correct pressure maximises the tyre's ability to channel water.

3. Reduce speed in heavy rain

The Highway Code recommends doubling your stopping distance in wet conditions. At 50mph with good tyres on a wet Scottish motorway, this is sound advice. At 70mph in standing water with worn tyres, it is essential.

4. Avoid sudden steering or braking in standing water

Approach standing water gradually, reducing speed smoothly before you enter it. Sudden steering or braking in water dramatically increases aquaplaning risk.

5. Avoid driving through unknown depths of standing water

Water as shallow as 15cm can cause control loss. If you cannot see the road surface through flood water, do not drive through it.

What to Do If Your Car Aquaplanes

  1. Do not panic: Aquaplaning is temporary — as speed reduces, the tyres regain contact with the road.
  2. Do not brake sharply: This can make the vehicle unstable and extend the aquaplaning period.
  3. Ease off the accelerator gently: Allow the car to slow through engine braking.
  4. Hold the steering wheel straight: Keep it pointing in your intended direction of travel. Do not attempt to steer while the tyres have no grip.
  5. Wait for grip to return: You will feel the steering firm up as the tyres regain road contact. Only then gently steer if correction is needed.
  6. Check your tyres: After a severe aquaplaning incident, stop and check for tyre damage. The sustained sliding can cause unusual wear.
