# Why Are My Tyres So Loud? Causes of Tyre Noise in Scotland
Tyre noise is one of the most common concerns drivers raise — and also one of the most often misdiagnosed. Noise that sounds like it is coming from the tyres may actually be caused by the tyres themselves, by uneven tyre wear, by wheel bearings, or by the road surface. Getting the diagnosis right matters because some causes are safety-critical and require immediate action.
Types of Tyre Noise and What They Mean
1. Humming or Droning That Gets Louder at Speed
Sound: a low-frequency hum or drone that increases in pitch and volume as speed increases. May be constant or may vary. Most likely causes: Uneven tyre wear (cupping or scalloping) — the most common cause of tyre humming. When a tyre wears in an uneven diagonal pattern (cupping), the irregular tread surface creates a rhythmic sound as it contacts the road. The noise gets worse as the wear progresses.To check: run your hand across the tyre tread. If it feels bumpy or wavy rather than smooth and even, the tyre has developed cupping wear. This is caused by wheel imbalance or worn shock absorbers and will not get better — replacement is necessary.
Wheel bearing failure — a failed or failing wheel bearing creates a similar hum or droning sound that increases with speed. Unlike tyre noise, wheel bearing noise may change when you swerve gently left or right (because lateral G-forces load or unload the bearing). If the noise changes when you swerve, suspect the wheel bearing on the side that gets quieter when you load it. How to distinguish: cupping tyre noise is typically related to the tread frequency (sounds rhythmic, tied to wheel rotation speed). Wheel bearing noise is smoother and higher-frequency. Both get louder with speed. Scotland note: Scottish roads — particularly B-roads and rural routes — have more surface irregularities than English motorways. This makes wheel imbalance-related cupping significantly more common in Scotland.---
2. Rumbling or Roaring at Constant Speed
Sound: a deep rumble or roar, most noticeable at motorway or A-road cruising speeds (50–70 mph). May feel like vibration through the seat or steering wheel. Most likely causes: Aggressive tread pattern (all-terrain or mud tyres) — if you have fitted all-terrain or mud-terrain tyres (BFGoodrich KO2, Falken Wildpeak, etc.), the open tread blocks create significant road noise on smooth tarmac. This is normal for these tyre types and is not a fault. It can be reduced by fitting a quieter all-terrain variant or returning to highway terrain tyres. Worn tread with standing wave — very worn tyres (below 2mm) can generate increased road noise as the thin tread loses its ability to absorb road surface irregularities. If the roaring correlates with lower-than-expected tread depth, replacement is necessary. Large diameter tyres on low-profile vehicles — fitting tyres larger than the manufacturer's recommendation (a common modification) can create resonant frequencies with the vehicle's wheel arches.---
3. Thumping or Vibration at Low Speed
Sound: a rhythmic thump, bump, or vibration, especially noticeable at speeds below 30 mph. May disappear at higher speeds. Most likely causes: Flat spot on tyre — a flat area that has developed on the contact patch. Most commonly caused by:- Emergency braking that locked a wheel (pre-ABS vehicles, or ABS failure)
- Vehicle standing stationary for a long time in cold weather (temporary flat spot, usually rounds out after a few miles)
- Impact damage that has caused internal deformation
A flat spot creates a characteristic thump-thump-thump sound at low speed that may smooth out above 40–50 mph as the tyre warms and the rubber becomes more flexible.
Out-of-round tyre — a tyre that is no longer perfectly circular (can occur after severe impact damage). This creates rhythmic vibration that is most felt at lower speeds. Wheel imbalance — an unbalanced wheel creates rhythmic vibration, typically most noticeable at a specific speed band (often 50–70 mph for typical imbalance weights).---
4. Squealing on Corners
Sound: high-pitched squeal when turning, particularly in car parks or at low speed. Most likely causes: Driving too fast for the corner — lateral forces cause the tyre to slip on the road surface, creating the squeal. Most common in performance driving, but also on very slippery road surfaces or worn tyres. Very worn tyres — below 2mm of tread, tyres have significantly less lateral grip. They squeal at lower cornering forces than a new tyre. Understeer — front tyres breaking traction before the rears in a corner. This creates a squeal from the front axle. 5. Screeching or Screeching at High Speed
Sound: loud, harsh screeching at highway speed. Very unpleasant and abnormal. Most likely causes: Tyre failure imminent — unusual loud screeching from a tyre at speed can indicate internal failure before a blowout. Pull over safely and immediately if you hear this. Severely worn tyre — a tyre worn completely through the tread to the cord will make a harsh, abrasive sound. Sidewall rubbing — overly large tyres fitted without appropriate offsets can rub against the wheel arch at speed, creating a screeching noise.---
When Tyre Noise Requires Immediate Action
Stop driving immediately if:- You hear loud screeching or banging that was not present before
- You hear a sound immediately after a pothole impact

- A gradual increase in humming noise over the past few weeks (likely cupping wear — safe to drive but deteriorating)
