Run-flat tyres are now standard on many vehicles — particularly BMWs, MINIs, Mercedes, and some Volkswagen models. If you drive one of these vehicles and get a flat in Scotland, the rules are different from conventional tyres.

What Are Run-Flat Tyres?

Run-flat tyres have reinforced sidewalls that support the weight of the vehicle even when the tyre has zero air pressure. This allows you to continue driving at reduced speed (typically 50mph maximum) for a limited distance (typically 50 miles) to reach a safe location.

• The tyre is not damaged structurally (no blowout, no sidewall cut)
• You are driving on normal roads (not demanding terrain)

Can Run-Flat Tyres Be Repaired?

This is one of the most common questions about run-flat tyres, and the answer is:

Usually no.

The British Standard (BSAU159f) guidance on tyre repair explicitly states that a run-flat tyre that has been driven while deflated should not be repaired. The reason is that the sidewall reinforcement may have been damaged internally — and this damage is not always visible externally.

Exceptions are rare: a run-flat tyre that was noticed immediately (before being driven deflated) and has a clean puncture in the central tread area may sometimes be assessed for repair. A qualified fitter will inspect the tyre and advise honestly.

In Scotland, if you have driven any distance on a deflated run-flat, assume it needs replacement.
