Smart #1 and Smart #3 Tyre Fitting Scotland: EV Tyre Guide
Smart #1 and Smart #3 EV tyre guide for Scotland: 235/45R19 and 245/45R19 sizes, no spare tyre policy, load index requirements, and mobile tyre fitting for Smart EVs across Scotland.
# Smart #1 and Smart #3 Tyre Fitting Scotland: EV Tyre Guide
Smart is no longer the micro-city-car brand of the ForTwo. The modern Smart brand — a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely — now produces premium-sized electric SUVs with a very different tyre profile from their predecessors.
If you own a Smart #1 or Smart #3, here is what you need to know about tyres in Scotland.
---
Smart #1 Tyre Sizes
The Smart #1 (launched 2023) is a compact electric SUV on 19" wheels.
Standard Smart #1 (Pure / Pro / Pro+):- 235/45R19 on 19" alloy wheels
- Load index: 99 or 95 depending on version — confirm on the tyre sidewall
- Speed rating: Y (186mph rated)
- 235/45R19 front and rear (same size for both axles, despite AWD performance)
- Higher load index (99+) due to additional torque and weight
- No spare tyre — Smart #1 carries a tyre inflation/sealant kit instead
---
Smart #3 Tyre Sizes
The Smart #3 (launched 2023) is a fastback-bodied electric SUV, slightly longer than the #1.
Standard Smart #3 (Pro / Pro+):- 235/45R19 — same size as Smart #1 in most variants
- 245/45R19 rear (wider) — may be the same front and rear depending on market variant
- Confirm the exact size on your tyre sidewall before ordering

EV-Specific Tyre Requirements
Like other modern EVs, Smart #1 and #3 require tyres with:
Adequate load index: EVs are heavier than equivalent petrol cars due to the battery. Smart #1 weighs approximately 1,800–1,900kg. Each tyre must carry roughly 475kg at maximum (LI 99 = 775kg capacity, giving adequate headroom). Low rolling resistance: Smart EVs are fitted with tyres optimised for EV use, reducing energy consumption and maximising range. When replacing, choose tyres with A or B rolling resistance rating on the EU label. No spare tyre: Smart #1 and #3 do not include a spare wheel. They carry a tyre inflation kit (aerosol sealant + compressor). This foam sealant has important limitations:- Only works on small punctures in the tread area (nail/screw)
- Does not work on sidewall damage or large holes
- Ruins the tyre for future proper repair — if foam has been used, the tyre cannot be BSAU159 repaired and must be replaced
- Does not work if the tyre is a run-flat (Smart models are not run-flat, but worth knowing)
After using the foam kit, call Tyre Rescue for a replacement — do not continue driving on the foam-repaired tyre indefinitely.

Which Tyre Brands for Smart #1 / #3?
The Smart #1 and #3 are fitted from the factory with various brand options. Compatible replacements in 235/45R19 include:
- Continental PremiumContact 6 / 7 (OE on some variants) — excellent wet grip, A-rated fuel efficiency
- Michelin Primacy 4+ / Pilot Sport EV — low rolling resistance, strong in wet Scottish conditions
- Hankook Ventus Prime 4 — good mid-range option at lower cost than premium alternatives
- Bridgestone Turanza 6 — EV-focused, designed for smooth ride and low rolling resistance
Always verify the load index and speed rating match or exceed your current tyres before fitting.

TPMS on Smart #1 and #3
Smart EVs are equipped with TPMS. After any tyre replacement, TPMS sensors must be reset via the Smart app or dashboard menu.
If a sensor needs replacing (battery failure after 5–7 years, or damage from a pothole), we carry standard 433MHz TPMS sensors compatible with Smart vehicles.

Scotland-Specific Notes
Range in Scottish winter: cold weather reduces EV battery performance and increases tyre rolling resistance. In January/February, Scottish Smart #1 and #3 owners can expect 15–25% range reduction versus summer. Winter or all-season tyres (3PMSF-rated) add further rolling resistance but improve traction significantly in the Highlands. 19" wheels and Scottish roads: 235/45R19 is a low-profile fitment that is vulnerable to pothole damage. After any hard impact on Scottish roads, inspect the sidewall and have the wheel checked for rim damage.---
