Volkswagen Amarok Tyre Fitting Scotland: V6 TDI and 3.0 TSI Sizes and Options

VW Amarok tyre guide for Scotland: first-gen and current-gen V6 sizes, all-terrain upgrade options, 255/60R18 and 265/60R18 specifications, commercial load rating requirements.

# Volkswagen Amarok Tyre Fitting Scotland: V6 TDI and 3.0 TSI Sizes and Options

The Volkswagen Amarok has always been popular with Scottish professionals and businesses wanting a pickup with more refinement than the typical workhorse alternative. The Amarok is especially common in the Highlands and Aberdeenshire oil sector, where premium pickup trucks are the norm.

Amarok Generations: Tyre Sizes

First-Generation Amarok (2010–2022)

The original Amarok was produced for over a decade with incremental changes. The V6 TDI (introduced 2016) became the definitive version.

Trendline / Comfortline (2.0 TDI):
  • 215/65R16 — base 16" steel wheels
  • 235/65R17 — optional 17" alloys
Highline / Aventura / V6 TDI:
  • 255/60R18 — the most common V6 size on 18" Talca alloys
  • 255/55R19 — optional 19" wheels

Second-Generation Amarok (2023–present)

The NF-generation Amarok is a shared platform with the Ford Ranger, though the body and interior are distinctly VW. It is more premium than the original, with a wider range of engines including the 3.0 TSI petrol.

Style / Life / Style 4Motion:
  • 255/60R18 — standard on Style trim
  • 265/60R18 — upgraded fitment
Aventura / PanAmericana:
  • 265/60R18 — standard
  • Some PanAmericana variants shipped with 255/60R18 with AT tread pattern from factory

Load Index Requirements

Like all commercially-rated pickups, the Amarok requires adequate load index tyres for its payload capacity.

Minimum load index for Amarok use: 112 (1,120kg per tyre). This applies to all commercial uses.

Some premium tyres in 255/60R18 are available in load index 107 (passenger car rating). These are technically the correct size but do not carry enough load for a fully-laden Amarok. Always confirm the load index when ordering:

  • Look for 112 or 114 suffix in the tyre specification
  • Or a C designation (e.g., 255/60R18C) for van/commercial variants (rare in this size)

All-Terrain Tyre Upgrades for the Amarok in Scotland

The Amarok handles Scotland's varied terrain very well on standard road tyres, but many Scottish Amarok owners upgrade to all-terrain tyres for better traction on:

  • Rural Scottish estate and agricultural tracks
  • Forestry roads
  • Gravel drives and remote property access
  • Seasonal muddy routes

Recommended AT Tyres for Amarok in Scotland

BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 (255/60R18)

The benchmark AT tyre in this size. Aggressive tread, 3PMSF-rated for winter performance, excellent sidewall protection against the sharp rock edges common on Highland tracks. LI 112 available.

Falken Wildpeak AT3W (255/60R18)

Very strong value compared to BFG KO2. Excellent wet road performance and 3PMSF-rated — important for Scotland's long wet season. LI 112 available.

General Grabber AT3

Budget-priced AT option with 3PMSF rating. Good for moderate off-road use and improvement over highway tyres on rural tracks.

Will AT Tyres Affect Fuel Economy?

Yes — AT tyres have higher rolling resistance than highway tyres. Expect a 10–15% reduction in fuel economy compared to the original road tyres. The tradeoff is better traction and significantly more capability off tarmac.

Tyre Pressure for Amarok by Load State

Load stateFrontRear
Light (driver only)35 PSI / 2.4 bar35 PSI / 2.4 bar
Part-load38 PSI / 2.6 bar41 PSI / 2.8 bar
Full payload / towing38 PSI / 2.6 bar44 PSI / 3.0 bar

Always check your specific vehicle's door sticker for the exact recommended pressures, as these vary between models and generations.

TPMS on VW Amarok

The Amarok is fitted with TPMS. After any tyre change, the TPMS must be reset using a scan tool or the dashboard TPMS menu (depending on generation).

When upgrading to AT tyres, the TPMS system will continue to function normally provided the new tyres carry the same size as the originals. If the size changes (e.g., moving to 265/60R18 from 255/60R18), the TPMS needs recalibration.

Tyre Rescue performs TPMS reset as standard with every tyre change.
